SPEAKER_07
00:34 - 00:44
Good evening Traveler and welcome to the Penumbra. Tonight's tale is The Fall.
SPEAKER_14
00:58 - 01:09
Okay, I think I got all that. I just have one question. Yet? Who the hell are any of these people again?
SPEAKER_16
01:09 - 01:13
Well, we don't have time for me to tell it all again. It's already been ours.
SPEAKER_14
01:13 - 01:24
Sorry, this story is just a little hard to follow when I only know Damian and Sir Mark. And maybe I saw Mark's brother, what's his name? One time? Maybe?
SPEAKER_16
01:27 - 01:34
What's the frog-guys name again? Lord Arum, and he's a lizard. Or maybe a bug?
SPEAKER_14
01:34 - 01:36
Well, I was going to hell of a lot of friends, doesn't she?
SPEAKER_16
01:36 - 01:38
Who can you blame them?
SPEAKER_14
01:38 - 01:41
No. No, I guess I can't.
SPEAKER_16
01:41 - 02:01
Sometimes the universe thinks it made her that way on purpose to bring together humans and monsters. Sometimes it thinks that people are the way they are and it can't influence that very much. And here's Kwoni in the middle, trying to fit both of those thoughts. They never had it the same time.
SPEAKER_14
02:01 - 02:23
Alright, so Silver Shore is falling to pieces. You told me that Lord Arum, Mark, and those two friends of Ola-la's Angelo and Aley. They've all escaped Silver Shore through the mirrored planes, and a few days later near the lake of tranquility, Damian, Mark's brother, and Damn it, what's her name?
SPEAKER_16
02:23 - 02:27
Rilla. You'll want to remember that name. We're coming back to her in just a minute.
SPEAKER_14
02:27 - 02:49
Right, Rilla. Rilla. What was Mark's brother's name again? Who knows? Uh, okay. Well, those three tangled with the monster sent it and found out the monsters of spies and are ready to go to war whenever the second Citadel makes a move. And got their hands on St. Damien's spear. Did I miss anything?
SPEAKER_16
02:49 - 02:51
Well, not yet, but the night is young.
SPEAKER_14
02:51 - 03:00
You're right, then. We are further along than I thought. One of the Saints' relics down and two to go. Does the universe know a Ferdinand slingshot is?
SPEAKER_16
03:00 - 03:17
If it does, it isn't thinking about it. It's mind isn't like a library I can search through. It's more like a hundred musical performances all at the same time. If I listen carefully, I can make out one or the other, but most of the time it's just... Just... Noise.
SPEAKER_14
03:17 - 03:31
You know, a whole lot of it. It sounds like Hell, it's not like it would solve all our problems anyway. It's like Damien said before he got his hands on that spear, even if we get all these relics, what the hell are we supposed to do with them?
SPEAKER_16
03:31 - 04:14
They're very powerful. The emissary from over the edge of the world, the one that Mark thinks is called the hand. He isn't quite right that this universe is only a little bigger than they tend to be. Even among the species of creature the universe is, it's very powerful and very Imaginative. Too imaginative, maybe. It spends all its magic on things it's curious about. Things it would like to see, things it thinks it's creation's need. Those people from over the world's edge, I don't think they understand how powerful the universe they've chosen to harvest is. All they know is that something went wrong when they first tried it thousands of years ago, but they haven't stopped to ask what that something is.
SPEAKER_14
04:14 - 04:21
Yeah, that which ghost Caroline was talking to said something similar, but it was spending all its magic on Oula.
SPEAKER_16
04:21 - 04:36
Not all, but a lot. I don't think the invaders know that this universe can make things as powerful as those three relics. I don't think they've gone up against a universe that can make weapons more powerful than their machines.
SPEAKER_14
04:36 - 04:45
Then you think we should just kill them? Another massacre on land in the waves in the sky, but taking down machines instead of monsters?
SPEAKER_16
04:45 - 04:48
I don't know what I think, but you don't exactly sound convinced.
SPEAKER_14
04:49 - 05:16
If I'm not convinced it's because I've never seen a war in my lifetime that was ended by killing a bunch of people. Humans and monsters in the north have been doing that forever, and it hasn't moved the needle either way. Best case scenario, if the Saints' relics really are enough to take out the arrow planes and everything else, the invaders just send more arrow planes. Maybe now, maybe a thousand years from now, but they'll send them, alright? And what the hell are we supposed to do then?
SPEAKER_16
05:16 - 05:18
If it's a thousand years from now, you'll be dead.
SPEAKER_14
05:18 - 05:54
So we just keep handing these weapons down generation to generation and hope nobody uses them for the wrong reasons in between? Break glass in case of off-world invaders? Or accidentally blows up an entire kingdom like what happened in the first Citadel? This universe can clearly protect itself when it gets the chance. That barrier around Silver Shore, the one from the Crystal Baby thing, Tristan and Gala had were trying to destroy. That kept the invaders away for a long time. What we need is something like that.
SPEAKER_16
05:55 - 06:04
something much stronger than that I think. That barrier only needed to keep them out. It sounds like you want something that can push them out and keep them there.
SPEAKER_14
06:04 - 06:07
Too big and ask, huh? Even for the universe?
SPEAKER_16
06:07 - 06:38
Maybe. It's so hard to tell. The universe is so big that even it doesn't understand what it can do most of the time. But I can at least tell you that you aren't the only one trying to think through these questions. The three who took St. Damien's spear were thinking about the same thing. Rilla and Damien and... And... And... And... Sir Talhran... Is something the matter?
SPEAKER_03
06:38 - 06:46
Huh? Oh, me. Oh, of course I mean you. Who else could I mean?
SPEAKER_17
06:46 - 06:53
Nothing, just... I don't know. That's sure it doesn't feel like it fits right anymore, I think.
SPEAKER_03
06:53 - 06:59
I certainly know the feeling, yes. I threw mine out years ago, but you look nervous, Brent Elfon.
SPEAKER_02
06:59 - 07:06
Of course he's nervous. It feels like we just broke out of the second citadel, and now we're trying to break our way back in.
SPEAKER_10
07:06 - 07:06
Really?
SPEAKER_03
07:06 - 07:14
What are you not, my friend? I'm sure we will be successful in our endeavor to take St. Aaron's hammer.
SPEAKER_17
07:14 - 07:20
That's not quite it. I just... You guys do really think our plan for the Saint Relics is a good idea.
SPEAKER_03
07:20 - 07:23
We've discussed this extensively.
SPEAKER_02
07:23 - 07:32
I know we've talked about it, but I still don't feel good about it. We're getting all these weapons so that we can just not use them really.
SPEAKER_03
07:32 - 07:35
Would you rather we kill humans by the dozen, by the hundreds?
SPEAKER_02
07:36 - 07:39
I'd rather we do something that doesn't end with everyone dead.
SPEAKER_03
07:39 - 07:43
As I've said, there exists a theory within the Temple of Tranquility's teaching.
SPEAKER_02
07:43 - 07:51
But aren't those teachings based around the miracle of Saint Damien killing all of those monsters? You said we won't be doing that.
SPEAKER_03
07:51 - 08:38
Even so, from a flawed premise we can, at times, find sound reasoning. Great minds, the temple of tranquility, have at times opposed the citadel's endless war, even if those minds were often exiled for doing so. Sounds familiar. But the theory, again, is this. If both sides of a war were to come upon weapons so terrible that each could mean the complete destruction of the other, these sides might enter a sort of eternal stalemate. Neither side can act without the other ensuring their destruction, and so neither side will act in order to preserve themselves. Thus, with the saints' relics in hand, we might be able to persuade the invaders from over the world's edge that to attack us would be there undoing, and so they will refuse to attack.
SPEAKER_17
08:39 - 08:43
But if it goes on forever, how would the war ever end?
SPEAKER_03
08:43 - 08:47
Well, it wouldn't.
SPEAKER_02
08:47 - 09:07
That sounds like a plan that Senators snout would just love. No side can make a big move in the war so the war just goes on forever. And that's all assuming the people in charge care about preventing their own deaths. You think Absalon would hold off on a war just because it would kill him? He'd love going out in a blaze of glory.
SPEAKER_03
09:07 - 09:08
Oh, I'm not certain.
SPEAKER_17
09:08 - 09:19
That's fair. And even if Absalon wouldn't do it, someone would eventually write. Forever is like forever. How could we ever make sure that people would keep that still me going after real die?
SPEAKER_03
09:19 - 10:19
I don't know. All right. Is that what you want to hear? I don't know. But we are all in agreement that something must be done. Yes? And quickly? Right. Yeah. Because we all agree that a weapon as powerful as St. Aaron's hammer. If the second citadel were to understand its power and attempt to use it, which does sound like epsilon, it could be catastrophic, particularly for monster kind. It is better in our hands than theirs. Are we in agreement? Sure. I guess so. Then we must take the hammer for ourselves. Once we have it? Well, as Telfron so clearly put it, forever is forever. We will have plenty of time to decide what should be done with it. But unless anyone has a more sound idea, I think we should put the topic to rest for now. If we have decided to act, we must act. hesitation even justified hesitation can only lead us to defeat.
SPEAKER_02
10:21 - 10:26
I think he's right, tell. If we've decided to do something, we have to actually do it.
SPEAKER_03
10:26 - 10:48
Okay. And now, for the problem before us, Saint Aaron's hammer is stored in the secret passage where leading to the Queen's hidden chambers within the Citadel Spire. We must find our way into the Spire and into that passage, procure the hammer and then escape undetected. Does anyone have any ideas as to how we might go about that?
SPEAKER_17
10:48 - 10:57
I don't know. We can see the Citadel walls from here, but there are an awful lot of guards outside them, and they keep trolling close to enclosures to us. You don't think they're looking for us, do you?
SPEAKER_02
10:57 - 11:04
How could they be? We escaped almost two weeks ago. They'd have to think we're nuts to try and sneak back in.
SPEAKER_03
11:04 - 11:35
To do exactly what we're doing, you mean? The irony is not lost on us, friend, to tell, friend. information. Before anything else, we must gather information. There must be some reason that the guard has been redoubled this day. If there is something special about today in particular, we may be able to use that strangeness to our advantage. Security is most secure when it's following its most practiced patterns, after all. Any change in the norm may present an opening we can take advantage of.
SPEAKER_02
11:35 - 11:36
That seems like a lot of maybe's Damian
SPEAKER_03
11:37 - 11:43
Risk is inevitable in this endeavor, I'm afraid. Let's draw closer and see if we can learn anything we can use.
SPEAKER_17
11:43 - 11:50
Okay.
SPEAKER_02
11:50 - 11:52
Those guards look like they're talking about something.
SPEAKER_03
11:52 - 11:56
And let's hide ourselves in those bushes, and you've had color of the wall, and learn what we may.
SPEAKER_12
11:56 - 12:09
Let's make a good impression, I think. And I've been showing the full force in the night of the crown and making sure they aren't interrupted.
SPEAKER_07
12:09 - 12:12
Interrupted in what?
SPEAKER_12
12:12 - 12:15
Interrupted in what are they doing?
SPEAKER_07
12:15 - 12:29
You see what I mean? It's far me and for me to question the captain. We don't know anything about these people doing. We know they're human, at least. Do we know that though? Actually, it's hard for me to believe that anything human can come from out there.
SPEAKER_12
12:29 - 12:31
Over the edge of the world you mean?
SPEAKER_07
12:31 - 12:32
Don't say it, it's obscene.
SPEAKER_17
12:32 - 12:34
The people from over the edge of the world!
SPEAKER_07
12:36 - 12:39
Did you hear that? Let's check it out.
SPEAKER_17
12:39 - 12:40
Oh no, no, what do we do?
SPEAKER_03
12:40 - 12:50
We say quiet first of all. If you've hit maybe too late for that, my Rilla, but my bow is no use in such close quarters and St. Damien's spear would surely kill him.
SPEAKER_07
12:50 - 12:52
It's going from that floor, she's okay.
SPEAKER_12
12:52 - 13:01
If there's anybody in there, the game is up. Come out with your hands up and you will not be harmed. You haven't till the count of three. One, two, androof.
SPEAKER_08
13:01 - 13:04
So, Dixon, hey, look who's back in town.
SPEAKER_07
13:07 - 13:09
The Salabander Knight.
SPEAKER_12
13:09 - 13:12
Sir Mark, is that really you?
SPEAKER_08
13:12 - 13:34
In the flesh, baby? Good to see you boys again. Our things are the old stomping ground. It's been straight. That's great, but I don't actually have time to talk. I need to speak to Captain Apsilong right away. Can you get him for me? Where's Sir Tristan? What the hell do you think I need to talk to Captain Apsilong about? Come on guys, let's show a little hustle. Tell him Sir Mark the Salamander Knight is home and he's got something important to tell him.
SPEAKER_12
13:35 - 13:42
Okay, let's go. Come on, sir. Dixie, let's go.
SPEAKER_08
13:42 - 13:53
You guys can come out of there now. No sense in letting bugs or whatever. Crawl all up in your clothes when the coast is clear.
SPEAKER_02
13:53 - 13:58
Mark, you're back. Does this mean you? There you go.
SPEAKER_08
13:58 - 14:03
I'm more or less. Yeah, but I couldn't have done it alone.
SPEAKER_09
14:07 - 14:14
Because, is that my best friend and rival in the flesh? Clay, it's cool, boy. You might be the guards around.
SPEAKER_17
14:14 - 14:20
Ali, Angela, in Indy's arms, it's... That's... Harom!
SPEAKER_04
14:20 - 14:23
Damn, you broochish. Oh, be careful how you jossle me as you go.
SPEAKER_06
14:23 - 14:35
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
SPEAKER_04
14:37 - 14:52
I can't tell you how glad it makes me. Lower me, Angela, this angle seems rather awkward. But of course! That's much better. I am so glad to see you again. I promised I would return.
SPEAKER_03
14:52 - 14:56
But are you all right? You seem terribly injured, my love.
SPEAKER_04
14:56 - 15:08
Time spent closer to the keep should heal these wounds. If we have enough time, that is. Between Mark, Angela, and Alley, we've learned quite a lot these past few weeks. I wasn't much time left.
SPEAKER_02
15:08 - 15:09
Time left for what?
SPEAKER_08
15:09 - 15:19
Time left before those two come back for one thing, and my cover's pretty much blown if you all are hanging around here. Go find somewhere to hide out, and I'll meet you there in a minute. An excellent point.
SPEAKER_04
15:19 - 15:20
Angela?
SPEAKER_06
15:20 - 15:27
Follow me, friends.
SPEAKER_08
15:27 - 15:31
Hey. Yeah. Tell?
SPEAKER_17
15:31 - 15:32
Yeah, Mark?
SPEAKER_08
15:33 - 15:48
I am. You look, I mean, I just felt like I should say I'm... I think you should probably go catch up with everyone else. I'll be there soon.
SPEAKER_17
15:48 - 15:48
Okay.
SPEAKER_02
16:00 - 16:10
I can't believe it. It's like those senators said, the off-worlders are really trying to take all the magic out of the universe, and they're going to go to the center of the universe to do it.
SPEAKER_09
16:19 - 16:21
They're going too quickly for us to sit around.
SPEAKER_08
16:21 - 16:32
Are we ready to move? It sounds like we've decided what we need to do, right? Someone's gonna go in there and take St. Aaron's hammer before Captain Absalon decides to use it. And I'm the only one who can still get in there.
SPEAKER_09
16:32 - 16:36
Not the only one. It won't recognize me. That's where something at least.
SPEAKER_06
16:36 - 16:49
No offense, but I'm not sure how comfortable at the passage to the hallway where St. Aaron's hammer is kept. The passage to the Queen's Secret Chambers is too small for a horse to fit through Mark. You will need assistance in order to take the hammer for yourself.
SPEAKER_09
16:49 - 16:52
And this way I get to keep an eye on you.
SPEAKER_08
16:52 - 17:06
All right. Fine. You ready to go? Born ready. All right. You heard the man dump here.
SPEAKER_04
17:06 - 17:23
That is a start, assuming they're successful. But it hardly solves all of our problems. If anything, it creates even more. The sight of that spear. I have to admit it makes my scales crawl.
SPEAKER_02
17:23 - 17:26
Tal, you okay?
SPEAKER_17
17:26 - 17:41
Yeah, what? Yeah, I just, sorry, I got a little distracted. Lord Arms right, though. Even once we have St. Damien's spear and St. Aaron's hammer, heck, even if we can find St. Ferdinand's slingshot, I don't know what we're supposed to do with them.
SPEAKER_04
17:41 - 17:44
You stole the spear and you don't even have a plan for it.
SPEAKER_17
17:44 - 17:51
No, we have a plan. I mean, mostly, it has some holes in it, but- What sort of holes might these be?
SPEAKER_06
17:51 - 17:58
I do, would like to hear this plan. Does it perhaps require prodigious strength?
SPEAKER_03
17:58 - 17:59
I'm afraid not, Angela.
SPEAKER_06
17:59 - 18:04
Uh, it seems plans rarely do in these dark days.
SPEAKER_02
18:04 - 18:11
Damian thinks that if we can get all three relics, we can threaten the off-worlders into leaving us alone without actually killing any of them.
SPEAKER_04
18:13 - 18:23
A war without bloodshed. Several of the monster senators have suggested a similar theory in years past. It seems very optimistic to me.
SPEAKER_02
18:23 - 18:38
Optimism's basically all we've got, though, isn't it? I mean, what else are we supposed to do? Just roll over and let them kill us all? If I'm going to die either way, I'd rather believe there's something I can do about it before I get there.
SPEAKER_04
18:38 - 18:46
Optimism is hardly all we have when we're holding a weapon of such incredible power. The denizens of this universe have a right to protect themselves.
SPEAKER_03
18:46 - 19:00
and if push comes to shove, I'm sure we will. But only if there is truly no other course of action. One cannot be a pacifist only when it is convenient. One's values are truly tested when they become difficult to uphold.
SPEAKER_04
19:00 - 19:06
That's an honorable viewpoint, I suppose. But it's not one I expect will last very long.
SPEAKER_03
19:10 - 19:35
Perhaps you're right. Even if this theory were to work and in the interest of self-preservation, the off-worlders do not attack us. That can only by time. What of the next generation, once we are dead and gone, how will we ensure that they understand the severity, the importance of protecting these relics, but only using them if there is absolutely no other choice? Just holding these weapons seems like an incredible risk.
SPEAKER_06
19:36 - 19:40
We can simply tell them so, and hope they tell the next generation.
SPEAKER_02
19:40 - 19:56
And the next... That only gets us so far, Angelou. People forget things over the course of generations. Or they tell stories, and then those stories get twisted. Just based on what the monster sent it said, I think we don't have the whole story about the Saints' relics, for example.
SPEAKER_03
19:59 - 20:14
The protective field over Silvershore was destroyed in much the same way. The jellyfish elder knew of it, but the workers at wayward east pressed did not, and so they did not protect it properly. The invaders from over the edge of the world have waited many centuries to take this universe, I suspect.
SPEAKER_06
20:14 - 20:24
Two true! I believe the podium in Sage Helicoid's shell chambers was made of the same metal as their aeroplanes. They must have been behind the attack that destroyed Fort Terminus all those years ago.
SPEAKER_03
20:24 - 20:32
And so, if we merely delay their assault, they will simply take our descendants instead of ourselves. I can hardly think of that as victory.
SPEAKER_04
20:32 - 20:42
A population, over generations, forgets. But an individual? Yes, perhaps an individual.
SPEAKER_02
20:42 - 20:44
What's that, Aaron?
SPEAKER_04
20:44 - 20:53
Angelo. Telfron. I apologize, but... Would it be possible for me to speak privately with Damian and Amarila's for a moment?
SPEAKER_06
20:53 - 21:11
Okay. But of course! Let us away, friend, Alfred. And allow the lovebirds there, privacy. Angela, I don't know. Oh, yes, of course. My apologies. The love lizards there. Here we are.
SPEAKER_03
21:11 - 21:14
Lord Arun, is there something you wanted to say to us?
SPEAKER_04
21:14 - 21:27
There he is. Though I find that now that I am on the cusp of saying it, I am having some difficulty willing the words to come forward.
SPEAKER_02
21:27 - 21:31
Then, Arum, can I ask you something first?
SPEAKER_04
21:31 - 21:33
Of course, I'm a ridist.
SPEAKER_02
21:33 - 21:51
I don't like asking this, but I am curious. It seems like the Senate knew exactly where the spear was. And since you voted in the monster Senate before, doesn't that mean you would have known, too?
SPEAKER_04
21:51 - 22:34
Well, I'd hoped that if you were going to ask first, you might ask something a bit easier to answer. Very well. I suppose, well, six years feels like hardly any time at all, doesn't it? Well, can easily put off a conversation to tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, until one looks up in the time is just Flet it away. Particularly when that topic is likely to be uncomfortable. Perhaps I'm just making excuses for myself. I've never done this sort of close, combingling before. Perhaps humans don't keep such secrets.
SPEAKER_03
22:34 - 22:51
No. No, I hardly think we are above that. Perhaps there are things I should tell you as well, Lord Ahram. Tamian, if not now, then when, my Rilla. It seems our time in this universe may nearly be at it end.
SPEAKER_02
22:51 - 22:54
All right, but let him talk first.
SPEAKER_03
22:54 - 23:04
Please do, and Lord Haram know that I will not be upset with you, no matter what you have to say. It is too great a relief to see you well again.
SPEAKER_04
23:04 - 24:11
We'll see if you feel that way when I'm through. Yes, I was aware of the hiding place of what you call Saint Damien's spear. I was aware that you would likely desire to know it's location, honeysoil. But I was aware as well, all two aware of the tales that monsters tell about that spear. About the terrible, destructive power it once had in the hands of a human. When you were still a knight, it was out of the question for me to share that information with you. to do so would betray monster kind to an extent that even a creature as solitary as myself could not bear. But once you revoked your knighthood, perhaps I could have told you. Perhaps I could have said that the monsters tell a very different story about the origins of that spear and those relics. Though I can't claim to know whose story is closer to the truth. Perhaps, perhaps. But I was cowardly, and I did not. I am sorry.
SPEAKER_03
24:11 - 24:15
I thank you, Lord Arum. But I do not think you have anything to apologize for.
SPEAKER_02
24:15 - 24:20
What? But I don't get it.
SPEAKER_04
24:20 - 24:22
You're still angry with me then.
SPEAKER_02
24:23 - 24:34
No, I just don't get it. There are a lot of religious things I don't get, and this one... Damien, you were so sure that spear belonged in the temple.
SPEAKER_03
24:34 - 25:06
It may yet. I don't know what story it will pin in my hands, and increasingly I believe that I'm not fully aware of the story that has brought it here today. But I know that I hardly trust myself with this spear. Such terrible power. It is a terrible thing to have such terrible power, particularly when one does not understand it. I think if I could hide it away again, I would. And so I am not angry with you for not telling me earlier, Lord Aaron. I am only honored that you feel you can tell me now.
SPEAKER_04
25:06 - 25:14
That is very generous of you. It is not the only secret I have kept from you.
SPEAKER_02
25:14 - 25:17
Better out than in. What else you got?
SPEAKER_04
25:17 - 25:30
You made an interesting point about the future guardianship of the three relics. And it strikes me that I may be uniquely suited to their protection for certain reasons.
SPEAKER_02
25:30 - 25:38
Humine like you could make a creature that would protect them. But Aram, after my deal with Kwanye, I don't think I could help you to take it.
SPEAKER_04
25:38 - 25:45
I would not make the creature on a relis. I believe I am the creature.
SPEAKER_02
25:45 - 25:47
What do you mean?
SPEAKER_04
25:47 - 26:54
I have not been honest with you both about my age. I am I suppose you would call it immortal ish. I have been alive for centuries and will likely live for centuries more. I will not live forever, but I may come quite close. I cannot die of old age, you see. Mordara, that is another reason it has been so easy for me to keep secrets from you. I have treasured these past six years more than I can say and at the same time compared to the scope of my life they are very little. I know that for you that is not the case. Mordara, you are likely furious with me and I do not blame you. Now, can you expect to have an equal relationship, a symmetrical relationship? With a creature that cannot comprehend a time or mortality in the same way as you can. The essential language we think in speaking exist within is severed.
SPEAKER_02
26:54 - 27:02
If you desire to— Haram, please shut up. We're not mad, at least. I'm not. Damien? Of course not.
SPEAKER_03
27:02 - 27:34
I am concerned, yes, but not angry. the essential language and an equal symmetrical relationship by a who cares you must have been so afraid of being alone and you didn't even tell us that sounds so hard indeed I wish only that I could help you in some way that you love us so much that you stay with us despite knowing the heartache that is inevitable in your future
SPEAKER_02
27:35 - 27:58
it's nice and I mean existentially horrifying when you think about it for more than a few seconds but nice also it is horrifying it truly is but nothing in our relationship has ever been simple has it suppose there's no reason this should be either
SPEAKER_03
27:59 - 28:06
No. Nothing is simple. And so, perhaps I should speak my heart as well, my Rilla?
SPEAKER_02
28:06 - 28:10
I... I still don't know, Damian.
SPEAKER_03
28:10 - 28:15
Arum has been brave, and so I think I must as well.
SPEAKER_04
28:15 - 28:17
Yes? What is it?
SPEAKER_03
28:17 - 28:27
Lord Arum, before we met you all those years ago, Rilla and I had made a sort of promise to one another. We were engaged to be married.
SPEAKER_04
28:28 - 28:34
Yes, I see. I didn't wonder what happened to that.
SPEAKER_03
28:34 - 28:38
You knew and you don't mind.
SPEAKER_04
28:38 - 28:54
I was aware, yes. But when the two of you didn't bring it up, I assumed. Well, that is I thought. I'm a relish. How do you feel about this promise?
SPEAKER_03
28:54 - 29:01
Oh, she is certainly for it. She agreed when I asked her after all, and I... Damien?
SPEAKER_02
29:01 - 29:07
I'm sorry. I guess... It's my turn to be honest now.
SPEAKER_03
29:07 - 29:11
What?
SPEAKER_02
29:11 - 29:25
I shouldn't have done it. But I think I used RM as an excuse. And I don't know how I feel about marriage. Well, maybe I do. I just didn't know how to say it.
SPEAKER_03
29:25 - 29:31
How long have you felt this way?
SPEAKER_02
29:31 - 30:27
Since before RM actually, I... When you asked me to marry you, I love you, Damian, and I could tell that you loved me, and getting married was how you wanted to express that love. And I saw how beautiful it was to you, and I know how much to adult traditions mean to you, and I think it's beautiful for you. But for me, after everything the Citadel did to my parents, and then exiling me, it just doesn't feel right. My love for this place is different from yours, Damien. And I want to do something that shows how much I love you. I really do, but doing the same thing that all citadel people do just isn't it. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03
30:27 - 30:37
I see. And even after all this time, you never, after all the times we discussed it. Damien. Honey, suckle.
SPEAKER_04
30:39 - 30:42
Perhaps it isn't my place to speak now.
SPEAKER_03
30:42 - 30:48
I think you should. I... I can reach no words from where I stand at present.
SPEAKER_04
30:48 - 31:08
Typically, I would say that you must take your time to let your feeling settle before acting. But now... Well, there is no guarantee that we will have that time now. Afraid you may have to act now in a way that would cause you no regret in the future. Provided we are allowed a future at all.
SPEAKER_03
31:11 - 31:35
Yes. Yes, I think you're right. And I can only imagine one course that I might regret. I suppose I can't blame you for hiding your feelings, my Rilla. I don't know that I would have responded very well to them at any point in the past.
SPEAKER_02
31:35 - 31:37
But you're okay now.
SPEAKER_03
31:39 - 32:28
wounded perhaps, but not fatally so. I might have guessed it to be frank, your reticence to discuss it, but well I suppose I didn't want to see it. And now on the potential eve of the end of everything, I suppose the truth must come out, mustn't it? There really isn't any other way. There are many ways we do not fit the three of us, but I find perhaps it is the darkness of these times, but I find that does not make me despair. It only makes me determined to build a way a new way perhaps to interlock the three of us together. A commitment of love is deeply powerful as marriage.
SPEAKER_02
32:28 - 32:31
That doesn't come with all the citadel's baggage.
SPEAKER_04
32:31 - 32:36
And that might last forever. You can be on the mortal scope of our arrangement.
SPEAKER_03
32:36 - 32:41
You've only, you've only there were such a way.
SPEAKER_06
32:41 - 33:12
If you don't mind my saying so, friend Talver, and you seem preoccupied. Even now that you've said your piece about this plan for the Saints' relics, something still appears to be on your mind. Yeah, maybe. Is it perhaps about your brother? How did you know? How could I not? He was very preoccupied about you as well during our journey here. Yet I noticed that once he actually arrived, you two have hardly spoken.
SPEAKER_17
33:12 - 34:00
There's so much to say, it's like it... I'll get stuck in the door in the way out, you know? I don't know if I forgive him yet. I don't know how I feel. There will be time. Do you know that though? Does anybody know that anymore? everything in life is it's always moving around and changing you know it feels like it takes all of your energy and focus just to keep up with it and to deal with that we always say tomorrow tomorrow I'll figure it out tomorrow but what do we do when there's no guarantee we'll even get a tomorrow how do we know what truth is so solid and real that it's worth saying today good questions all friend Alfred in the answers oh who can possibly say no but if I truly think on it I find
SPEAKER_06
34:01 - 34:32
Well I suppose I've find... If you feel a fire in your heart that something must be said, if the thought of never saying it seems too terrible to bear, you have no choice but to say it today, isn't that so? That makes it sound so easy. I disagree. I've made it sound simple, perhaps, as only a simple mind can. But simple and easy are not the same thing. Often I find them to be quite opposed to one another. A simple act cannot hide behind flourishes or grand gestures.
SPEAKER_17
34:32 - 34:45
It can only be itself. I guess that makes sense. Do you think he'll be safe in there? Trying to steal St. Aaron's hammer? I don't know what the Citadel would do to him if he gets caught.
SPEAKER_06
34:45 - 35:00
Why I'm certain he will. I've met few men as hard as your brother. And one of those men is Oleg, who stands now at his side. That's reassuring. Why, you should have seen them yourself, friend Tauferin. Hardly two weeks ago, Oleg had resolved to kill your brother.
SPEAKER_17
35:00 - 35:07
And when they locked sword, Oleg wants to kill Mark. And now they're in their alone together. But he changed his mind, right? Yes!
SPEAKER_06
35:08 - 35:14
Well, no. Well, I suppose we haven't broached the topic directly since now the convention. Ha ha ha ha. I suppose we'll find out one way or another soon enough now one week.
SPEAKER_14
35:14 - 35:35
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
SPEAKER_16
35:37 - 35:47
Don't know! The universe thought it was important, I guess. A story isn't just the useful parts, and stories are what the universe cares about most of all.
SPEAKER_14
35:47 - 35:55
It's just that I barely know these people, and now I'm kind of all up in the personal business, so... You'll meet them soon enough.
SPEAKER_16
35:55 - 36:04
That's... Even more awkward, actually? You learned that Lord Arm will live forever, is that useful enough for you?
SPEAKER_14
36:04 - 36:33
No, not to be a bummer or anything, but... Not really. Maybe if we can't think of anything better, but that would be pretty bad. Hard to get too excited about mutually assured destruction, especially given what we've seen from the people over the world's edge. Hard to believe they'll give up, no matter how many arrow planes we threaten to destroy, especially since the battlefield is our home, not theirs. We have everything to lose here. What's the universe think about that?
SPEAKER_16
36:33 - 36:36
Too many things to say, and most of them contradict one another.
SPEAKER_14
36:37 - 36:52
Cool. Super helpful. What about Mark and the one armed swordsman, Oleg? Did they manage to get their hands on St. Aaron's hammer?
SPEAKER_16
36:52 - 37:17
Fine then, I'll get back to the useful parts. While the three in love, the big man and the other one were having a series of very touching conversations that some people can't appreciate, Mark and Ali had managed to slip into the secret passage leading to Queen Mary's hidden chambers.
SPEAKER_08
37:17 - 37:22
That was a tight squeeze, even without tap here. I've got it the way. Yeah, I give miss.
SPEAKER_09
37:30 - 37:36
Never thought I'd ever be this deep into the Citadel Spire. I feel like I spent most of my life trying to stay away from this place.
SPEAKER_08
37:36 - 37:42
Well, if we don't get moving, they're going to lock us up somewhere much deeper. We're lucky we didn't run into many guards on the way here.
SPEAKER_09
37:42 - 37:46
That did seem weird to me. They must be busy with those special guests.
SPEAKER_08
37:46 - 37:59
Letting those people from over the edge of the world have the run of the place. I don't feel good about that. I've seen their machines up close and personal, and they're nested. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_09
37:59 - 38:16
Let's get moving. You're gonna crawl the whole way? What's it to you? Seems slow, that's all. Yeah, well. Listen, you get the feeling that both of us are used to people treating us without a whole lot of dignity. So I'm not gonna pick you up without asking, but I am offering.
SPEAKER_08
38:16 - 38:19
So you've decided you're not killing me?
SPEAKER_09
38:19 - 38:24
Jerry's out, but I don't need to be your best friend to fit you with respect. Now you're taking the right or not.
SPEAKER_08
38:24 - 38:25
All right, pick you back me.
SPEAKER_09
38:32 - 38:38
Let's move! Yeah! Don't push it.
SPEAKER_08
38:38 - 38:56
Should be simple enough. Get in. Grab the hammer. Get out. And where is the hammer? Should be close to the staircase that leads up to Queen Nera's secret chambers. Right around that corner. There. Bring the closer.
SPEAKER_09
38:56 - 39:00
Easy now. If what that lizard guy was saying is true, that thing is dangerous. I'll be careful.
SPEAKER_08
39:02 - 39:05
Oh, wait, this thing is heavy.
SPEAKER_09
39:05 - 39:08
Yeah, you're not the only one feeling it. Can we get out of here now?
SPEAKER_05
39:08 - 39:16
Find out that our second citadel has quite a lot of common ground with our new off universe friends. Isn't that right, Mike Wayne?
SPEAKER_18
39:16 - 39:20
Indeed, this meeting has been... edifying.
SPEAKER_15
39:20 - 39:33
Common ground, yes. That's a good way to think about it. This settlement has the close to the off universe values of your ancestors. You should take pride in that when you can. Wait, do you hear that?
SPEAKER_09
39:33 - 39:37
Yeah, someone's coming down this staircase. All the more reason to get out of here.
SPEAKER_08
39:37 - 39:43
That sounds like Captain Absalon, the Queen, and I don't recognize that third voice.
SPEAKER_09
39:43 - 39:45
So let's go before they recognize us.
SPEAKER_08
39:45 - 39:56
We might learn something important. Just hide around that corner for now, and let's see what we can hear, okay? If Absalon is expecting a special guest, this might be that guest. Fine.
SPEAKER_18
39:59 - 40:02
Will your people be staying with us long, Emissary?
SPEAKER_15
40:02 - 40:05
No, no. I think they've likely finished their inspection right about now.
SPEAKER_18
40:05 - 40:09
And to me, I ask what they've been inspecting for precisely?
SPEAKER_05
40:09 - 40:15
Far, be it for me to question you my queen, but I question whether it is naverly to interrogate our guests like this.
SPEAKER_08
40:16 - 40:20
That's him. The hand. The guy who killed Galad.
SPEAKER_09
40:20 - 40:23
He killed Galad. When are we off-worlders?
SPEAKER_08
40:23 - 40:36
Don't get any ideas all the way. Ideas? What ideas? You wanted to kill Galad. He killed Galad. So now you probably want to kill him. That's like the transit of property, isn't it? That's not really our venture.
SPEAKER_15
40:36 - 40:42
He thinks something. Most of the steam queen Mira. But for now, I'm afraid I must take your leave.
SPEAKER_05
40:43 - 40:49
Not said, said least, stay for dinner, my friend. We will hold a feast, the likes of which you've never seen in your honor.
SPEAKER_15
40:49 - 40:55
Goodbye.
SPEAKER_05
40:55 - 40:59
Well, I feel like that went very well. Don't you?
SPEAKER_09
40:59 - 41:00
He's coming this way.
SPEAKER_08
41:00 - 41:06
Where do we hide? Hide. There's a straight hallway behind us, and those three are in front. Where do you think we're gonna hide?
SPEAKER_09
41:06 - 41:09
Do you hear the one who said we had to listen in? You never planned to hide?
SPEAKER_08
41:09 - 41:15
Listen, I'm more of a one smart idea at a time, get a guy, so why don't you shut up and think of something.
SPEAKER_09
41:15 - 41:16
He's almost here.
SPEAKER_15
41:16 - 41:20
Excuse me.
SPEAKER_18
41:20 - 41:25
Huh. Did... Was that adversary just speaking with someone?
SPEAKER_05
41:25 - 41:40
Nervs, Mira. I'm certain it's just nerves. I have to admit I'm a bomb of nerves myself. Those off-world fellows do have a certain gravitas to them, don't they? A very serious bunch. Well, better than they're on our side than the alternative, isn't it?
SPEAKER_18
41:40 - 41:59
Are you certain she was on our side, Captain? He seemed more concerned with understanding the size of our army than anything else, and far beyond from me to criticize, especially since you've taken the captain of the guard post in addition to the journeymen captain post. But I do wonder about the wisdom and telling him so much.
SPEAKER_05
42:01 - 42:14
Those humans, from over the edge of the world, represent the future of our second citadel. The world they live in has accomplished our aim of eradicating monsters for good, and what's more like Queen, they've turned it into a science.
SPEAKER_18
42:14 - 42:19
Was that truly our aim, I wonder? Seems difficult to remember now.
SPEAKER_05
42:19 - 42:53
It has always been the night's aim, and the nights are the backbone of the second citadel, and where the backbone goes, so must the button, yes? Otherwise, well... We'd have to get the castle guy to crack around that, wouldn't we? And a good thing too, because I don't know if we could have taken on those arrow planes on the like. So, all is as it should be. Yes, I think that went very well. Very well indeed.
SPEAKER_08
42:53 - 42:55
What the hell was that?
SPEAKER_09
42:55 - 42:58
I don't know, but the ceiling's coming down. I never get out of here.
SPEAKER_18
43:03 - 43:04
I'm not going to our Citadel.
SPEAKER_01
43:04 - 43:08
All right, let's move.
SPEAKER_09
43:08 - 43:19
Oh my, look out! Damn it! The ceiling is totally caved in. How the hell are we supposed to get through here?
SPEAKER_18
43:19 - 43:22
Sir, are you doing here?
SPEAKER_05
43:22 - 43:28
And is that? You're not serious to go and use the hammer, are you? Hold on to your crown, your majesty, because this is about to get hairy.
SPEAKER_16
43:52 - 44:07
falling gravel, the flaming boards, humbling walls, it was the end, and outside the collapsing remains of the second signal, all the others could do was watch.
SPEAKER_06
44:07 - 44:12
All of this shaking, by this sound, it's like the final days of silver short. What's happening?
SPEAKER_03
44:13 - 44:20
The Citadel's fire. Look, my friends! The second Citadel is... Collapsing. No.
SPEAKER_06
44:20 - 44:35
Sure work! Fuck! This can't be. The second Citadel. Our Citadel. And all right. Where is all it? My... It's... really happening.
SPEAKER_02
44:35 - 44:47
The second Citadel... I always had such mixed feelings about it, but... This is so awful! Look at everyone running out of the craftsman's quarter out of everywhere! The craftsman's quarter!
SPEAKER_17
44:47 - 44:49
Oh, damn!
SPEAKER_03
44:49 - 44:58
The temple! The barracks! By many homes but all these years! Gone!
SPEAKER_17
44:58 - 45:04
And Mark, he can't be gone. I never said, I never told him!
SPEAKER_02
45:04 - 45:07
Tell, tell, look! There he is!
SPEAKER_06
45:07 - 45:09
And all the back of his horse!
SPEAKER_08
45:13 - 45:21
We have to go. Now. But the second set of hell is in real bad shape. We're gonna be in worship if I'm so honored in the Scoons catch up with us.
SPEAKER_09
45:21 - 45:24
He knows we have the hammer. We have to move.
SPEAKER_02
45:24 - 45:36
But the second set of hell. I'm sorry, but I think you need to say you're a goodbyes now, Damien. It's gone.
SPEAKER_03
45:36 - 45:38
Well, why is it a deal?
SPEAKER_14
45:57 - 46:02
The second Citadel. Belle? It's gone?
SPEAKER_16
46:02 - 46:11
It has. I'm sorry. And a lot more is going to go the same way.
SPEAKER_14
46:11 - 46:18
You can't believe it. I never would have thought. I can't believe it.
SPEAKER_16
46:19 - 46:32
neither could the universe. And that's, I think, why it listens so closely to what the hand had to say next to his leaders off the edge of the world.
SPEAKER_15
46:32 - 47:02
It is done. The largest organized military on the plateau has fallen. And now there should be nothing in the way of us taking the center of the universe. Not that there's much they could have done anyway. But you've asked me to ensure that this goes smoothly. And that's exactly how it's going to go.
SPEAKER_16
47:02 - 47:05
Lamarac, are you all right?
SPEAKER_14
47:05 - 47:28
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just thinking What am I saying? No, I'm not all right. That's two homes down now. I knew I knew that those invaders wanted to destroy everything. But nothing prepares you emotionally for when they actually do it.
SPEAKER_16
47:28 - 47:31
I'm sorry, but I don't think we have time.
SPEAKER_14
47:31 - 47:38
That's why I'm thinking now. But Mark and Alley got the hammer at least, right?
SPEAKER_16
47:39 - 47:45
That's right! That happened earlier today, or yesterday, I guess. It's early in the morning now.
SPEAKER_14
47:45 - 48:21
Two relics down. And all of those right, we have a lead on the third, but no matter how powerful they are, fighting back against these people might be the wrong move. They can always send more arrow planes and who knows what kind of damage will do to our own universe if we use the relics wrong. The hammer destroyed the first that it had left or all, so we need a way to keep them out. Somehow. The Ghost Witch that Caroline talks to Sylvia of Hyburna. She said that the universe was spending so much magical energy on Ola that it couldn't protect itself. Is that right?
SPEAKER_16
48:21 - 48:22
Hard of the universe thinks so.
SPEAKER_14
48:22 - 48:28
And so if the universe had more magic to spend, it could get rid of the invaders and keep them away on its own.
SPEAKER_16
48:28 - 48:44
But Ola, part of the universe is so scared it wants to give up on her and it's so hard not to listen to that part, but she's hope isn't she? And if the universe doesn't have hope, if we don't have hope, what's even the point?
SPEAKER_14
48:44 - 49:01
Nothing's going to happen to Oola, not if I have anything to say about it. But she can't be the only thing the universe is spending its magic on. Those relics, for example, if they're that destructive, wouldn't they be packing a lot of power of their own?
SPEAKER_16
49:01 - 49:04
I think I know what you're suggesting.
SPEAKER_14
49:04 - 49:05
Well, would it work?
SPEAKER_16
49:06 - 49:13
I don't know. I don't think the universe knows either, not really. And even when it does, it's so difficult to get a straight answer.
SPEAKER_14
49:13 - 49:27
So it's a maybe, but given how rough everything's looking, I'll take a maybe. If you saw that, you must be able to get around the universe pretty quick, right? Think you can deliver a few messages from me?
SPEAKER_16
49:27 - 49:29
What do I look like, an airing girl?
SPEAKER_14
49:29 - 49:31
It'll help Caroline.
SPEAKER_16
49:31 - 49:33
Okay.
SPEAKER_14
49:33 - 49:42
All right. I want you to get to that other group, Mark and the Frog guy and all of them, and tell them to meet us at the center of the universe.
SPEAKER_16
49:42 - 49:44
I suspect it is much.
SPEAKER_14
49:44 - 49:50
Then I want you to do the same for the Queen and Absalon. Tell them to bring what's left of the night too.
SPEAKER_16
49:50 - 49:52
Them, but won't they get in a way?
SPEAKER_14
49:52 - 50:04

SPEAKER_16
50:04 - 50:09
My hope so. If you let anything happen to my Caroline.
SPEAKER_14
50:09 - 50:18

SPEAKER_16
50:18 - 50:28
All right, then. Whew.
SPEAKER_14
50:28 - 50:34
It's a long shot, Lamar. But when a long shot's the only shot you got, you take it every time.
SPEAKER_10
50:37 - 50:47
Layout. Is it my turn to take the watch yet? It feels like I've been asleep for longer than I should.
SPEAKER_14
50:47 - 50:53
I've got the watch for tonight Ola. Get some rest. I'm thinking you'll need a lot of it to get through what's coming next.
